World Building: The Wind Kingdom

An open discussion for the Wind Kingdom. Ideas will be expressed in posts, then added to a collection here.

Wind Kingdom

Location

Bestowed upon them from the Wind Kyklos, the land of the Wind Elementals is an archipelago in the sky. For visiting wolves, thin bridges connect the various islands. Be careful though, as it’s a treacherous drop to the ground thousands of meters beneath. Built into a cliff that houses the bridge is a small kingdom, hanging precariously over the edge. There you’ll mostly find pups and adolescents, learning how to control their wind element in order to float themselves up to the islands.

As a necessity, various guards are stationed around the entrance of the wind kingdom. While many wind wolves consider themselves practically invincible in their cloud island fortresses, there’s always a chance for enemy attack. You’ll find once you meet these wolves though, they’re actually rather lax when not defending or scouting.

Among the many wonders you can see in the Wind Kingdom, perhaps the greatest marvel is the islands themselves. Even a non-wind elemental can step upon the dense clouds that form the main islands, while cloud-herders work to keep smaller cumulus cloud communities together, in which only wind wolves live. When you step onto the main island, you’ll see a multitude of towering spires, with ports on all floors for wolves landing from cloud-transports. Each island has its climate system, as distance from the ground increases. Occasionally, you can even find ice wolves on to uppermost islands, where it snows almost daily! Many wind wolves don’t go that high, preferring the more subtropical climates at the lower elevations of their homes.

There are five main islands, where non-wind wolves can walk around. The largest is at the base, while the smallest is “top” island.

The bottom island is Omíchli, or “Fog”. It houses a majority of tourist attractions, such as the Wind Elemental Museum, the single largest collection of artifacts from wound the kingdoms.(They stole some)

Above it and slightly to the left is Pyknó Sýnnefo, or “Cumulus”(direct translation is “thick cloud”). This is mostly the housing district, with many landing platforms littered around it. Hundreds of neighbourhoods branch out of it, connected by cloud chains. Their neighbourhoods are truly a sight to behold, with their houses decorated just as beautifully as their own pelts. Feathers and silks decorates the insides, arranged in beautiful displays, almost like flowers. Held aloft by magic, floating lanterns glide slowly through the city, illuminating the carved designs of the outside cloud towers.

To that’s upper left is Kataigída Sýnnefo, or “Storm cloud”. This is the business district. As the wind kingdom doesn't manufacture anything, this is more an office district. Police, officials, and other such workers reside here. Wind wolves, although flighty, are well-known for their amazing artwork.

To that’s far right is Stróma Nefélis, or “Stratus”. Any wolves who live here are more down-to-earth wolves, living mostly among the permafrost and that’s about it. There isn't much, but if you want a quiet place, that’s where you want to go.

At the highest elevation and constantly shifting position is Elikoeidís Vlastós, or “Cirrus”. Snow actively falls here, leading extreme wind conditions. Many a silly young wolf have lost their life trying to cloud-surf the treacherous winds. A few ice wolves even make their home up here, hidden away within the snow mountains.

Physical Appearance

Most, if not all, wind wolves have a base coat colour of white or gray. It’s rare to find other colours, as it’s not practical in a cloud environment. However, don’t think all wind wolves look alike! Personal freedoms run wild in the wind kingdom, so you can find just about any kind of coat pattern, from stripes to streaks to speckles! Shapes are rare, but can be found in the more exclusive regions of the kingdom. Many wind wolves have long locks of fur in the front of their faces, leading to all sorts of coloured bangs. There are shops around devoted solely to the dying of the frontal bangs of wind wolves, with certain colours, such as purple, being a sign of nobility if dyed that way, as it takes the crushing of many, many, many small snails to create purple dyes. Some wolves are lucky enough to be born with pre-coloured bangs.

Build-wise, most wind wolves have thin, lithe builds, built for walking and jumping around the clouds. Tufts of fur can be found insulating certain areas, such as at the joints, and around the face and ears. Due to being at such high altitudes, weather is sometimes rather cold. For those living at lower altitudes, it’s sometimes common to see these extra tufts of fur styled-up with pine sap or pulled back, as they’re not as needed when it’s warmer.

Wind wolves have exceptional eyesight, and make for excellent scouts and spies. It’s rumoured that in the black market, that wind wolves are hired out as guards for illegal doings, due to their ability to see enemies coming from a mile away. Eye colours are often blue or yellow, with the occasional purple mixed in there. Paws are small and delicate, used to traversing across fluffy clouds. Thusly so, there isn’t much muscle mass on most wind wolves, and those that are exceptionally brute-like typically are drafted into the military early on.

Accessories

Wind wolves accessorise solely with… Feathers! The more feathers and the more brilliantly coloured, the wealthier one is. At balls, draping feather gowns are a community. Different colours represent different things, and clusters can mean a different thing as a whole.

Red- Passion
Pink- Love
Orange- Life
Yellow- Happiness
Green- Luck/Loyalty
Turquoise- Stability
Blue- Wisdom
Indigo- Change
Purple- Wealth
Black- Strength
White- Purity/Peace
Cyan- Truthfulness
White, Pink, and Yellow- Beauty
Cyan and Green- Good Fortune
Black, Red, and Silver- Power
Orange and Indigo- Birth
Pink, Red, Yellow, and Turquoise- Lasting love

Specialty

Wind element wolves specialise in transportation and scouting. As they have little to no natural resources, everything they get has to be traded for. Thusly so, they’re worldwide known as transporters, ferrying heavy materials great distances on cloud boats. It’s not an uncommon sight across the elemental nations to see an oblong cloud moving across the sky with various smaller dots circling around it.

In addition to being specialised in the outside world, they’re also known for a unique job caste they have: Cloud herders. Cloud herders are wolves with exceptionally strong wind powers who can ride clouds for long distances, and use their winds to push and shove clouds into one another to keep them at size as they lose mass and density. It’s a dangerous job, as inexperienced and lax cloud-herders can neglect their clouds, leading to their masses becoming too light, letting wolves fall to their deaths. It’s happened so many times, cloud-herders are forced to work only above the cliff sector for their first year, until they’ve proven they can handle themselves in the open sky.

Wind wolves are also known for their art. Composed mostly of using blasting winds to mold materials, many great statues are commissioned by other nations from the wind kingdom. At their strongest, wind wolves can unleash gale-force winds to bend thinner metals around steel frames.

Personality

Wind elementals are, fundamentally, flighty. Many find them lazy, fickle, and disloyal. However, wind elementals are deeply passionate about life in general, and prefer to enjoy it best they can. You’ll never find such rowdy pups and teens in any other kingdom. They’re naturally carefree, but deeply intuitive. Wind wolves are quick to notice what others wouldn't, if you can get them to focus long enough. Air is one of the friendliest and sociable elements out there. Not to mention constantly seeking new things to enjoy. Care-free does not amount to laziness. Wind is highly intelligent and demands mental stimulation constantly. They are so easily bored because of this. They're fun-loving and light-hearted, and just give this refreshing quality of youth and spirit to those around them. They are care-free in a way that they don't care about what's holding them back, because for Wind, anything is possible. They are care-free in a way that makes them non-judgmental and accepting of everyone. They are care-free in a happy sort of way. Wind is joyful young spirit. Sanguine. Light. Clarity. Acuity.

Naturally, personal freedoms are of large concern to most wind wolves. Even political leaders tend to do their own thing, regardless of rank. With their heads in the clouds, literally, Wind wolves have a bad reputation for being too lackadaisical about things.

The wind wolves’ worst personality trait is their penchant for vanity and stealing. Many precious artifacts were stolen from other kingdoms to be put in their museum. Seeing as how their home is a giant cloud, it's near impossible to retrieve them. Wind wolves are also incredibly prideful, and status is everything. There have been cases of mangled pups even being thrown off the islands, but that was declared illegal centuries ago.

Politics

The wind kingdom is a constitutional monarchy, although it doesn't really do anything. Most of the department lazes around all day, waiting for something to happen. However, corruption easily spreads within the wind kingdom. Various times throughout history they’ve been tricked into following a dark path by a politician with a convincing smile. For a period of time, they were even under a totalitarian-style government. Due to this, a caste system reigns over most of the Wind Kingdom, without an easy way to escape the caste you were born into. Thusly so, not everyone has equal civil rights, even though laws prevent casteism.

(Not that they really minded, but anyways.)

Economy

The economy of the wind kingdom is fairly good. As they’re rather focused on themselves, it isn’t great by any stretch. Wolves spend lavishly on feathers to garnish their fur and dye to colour it, but otherwise spending is very, very low. However, the feathers and dye sales are enough to keep the economy fairly stable. Most wind elementals work either as artists, cloud herders, some sort of unneeded official, or the basic wolf jobs. Wind wolves are all about image and entertainment, so there are even a few athletes mixed in there.

For those especially talented, there’s an extreme caste that is far removed from the other castes. That caste is the dance caste, and is specifically for the wind elemental wolves who devote their lives to the sacred art of dancing. Dancers are provided with specially designed feathers, outfits, and jewelry to enhance effect. Kingdoms all over hire out wind elemental dancers, but it comes at a hefty price. Those who are skilled at are said to be closer to the Kyklos than other wolves, and using their wind element, they can even dance through the air.

Military

The Wind Kingdom’s military is… disorganized. Once a force to be reckoned with, they have since fallen into disrepair, minus the Defenders. Attackers spend a year at a training camp, and then are sent on border patrol as scouts, more than anything. The Wind Kingdom’s strongest point is the fact they’re practically inaccessible to most, so they spend a heavy amount of time teaching Defenders, or bridge guards, to fight to the best of ability. Many generals who are still left are power-hungry war hawks, and often attempt to stir up civil wars just for some fun.

Unfortunately for them, most of the Wind wolves would rather go buy feathers and watch others dance.

Ancient History

The Wind Kingdom was once great and powerful, a few scant years after it had established itself. They were known as one of the top military powers, and frankly, had to be. Islands in the sky? Who wouldn’t want those! In the beginning they had a King as well, who led them into pretty much a Military Dictatorship. Taught obedience from Earth, only the most privileged had the ability to relax, and take their time. At one point in time, you could barely walk through the streets the wolves were zipping around so fast!

Of course, if you even got into the Kingdom. For quite some time, Wind Kingdom patrols would savagely attack any wolves who came within sight of their borders, territorial as they were. Very few managed to get away fast enough to avoid serious damage, seeing as how Wind wolves were masters of ambush.

However, as time passed, and their militaristic lifestyle grew out of style with the world, it eventually fell apart. The previously-savage wolves now had nothing to occupy their free time, and eventually found ways to occupy themselves in “frivolous” activities, such as cloud-surfing and sculpting. Despite seeming lazy, you’ll find when inspired, these wolves are incredibly passionate and enthusiastic about whatever they do. This quality lets them easily be controlled, so long as what their new “hobby” is they deem fun.

Relationships

Overall- In general, the Wind Kingdom is fairly amiable, and prefers not to fight if they don’t have to. Their transport skills are highly valued, but they’re seen as a somewhat-isolated society. However, due to the stealing of several priceless artifacts, they’re on a bit rocky terms with a few Kingdoms.

Sun- The wind wolves are on good ground with the sun wolves. Due to their near invulnerability because of their island, the wind wolves never worried about invasion. As they transport large, heavy resources for them using their cloud boats, they tend to get along.

Moon- The wind kingdom rarely interacts with the moon wolves. They consider them too strict and quiet.

Fire- Wind gets along gloriously with Fire, often sending the latter their most skilled dancers for their festivals. Although they don't necessarily economically benefit, the two still are known to be good buddies.

Water- Wind and water get along… Decently. They almost kind of try to ignore each other, especially water to wind. Water is… Shy.

Earth- These two get along about as well as a slug and salt. They're constantly clashing, especially on character traits. They're polar opposites, and just don't get along, despite many attempts.

Electric- Wind and Electric are similar yet different. They share passion for “fun” things, but what's counted as fun… Well, those are a bit different.

Ice- Wind and Ice have a neutral relationship. To Wind, they’re just too quiet and stoic to be fun.

Time- The wind wolves hold the time wolves in extreme regard. Time wolves may as well be members of their own nation.

Space- The same as Time.

Culture

The Wind Kingdom culture is based highly on dance and rituals. While you won’t find shrines in homes, almost all citizens actively participate in festivals, lending forth knowledge. Accepting your caste in life is considered the best thing to do, and perfectionism in all things is to be obtained if possible. Of course, as time goes by, these values fade. In general, their most sacred art, dancing, has become something that can be sold out to others for entertainment.

That should tell you enough about how much they really value their old traditions… They move on very, very quickly, just like the wind.

However, a few traditions remain the same. It's customary to give bunches of feathers, or feather bouquets to pups, to grace them with the qualities the feathers represent. In fact, feathers play a huge role in the Wing Kingdom culture, being connected to a deep and complex history of representation of all sorts of status to distinguish warriors on the battlefield.

^This person has lovely examples. The creatures are not exactly "wolves", but they are really good none the less.

Dawww, thank you~ The idea is simply that those are examples of lays that the wolves themselves could put on, usually through the help of others. Lower-class wolves can thread feathers through their hair with just their paws, but elaborate displays such as those take time... and the moneys.

Heh, I suppose so. Not to mention it must be hard to move around in. I can see Wind wolves as dancers in those kind of outfits? Something like this may be more "common":

Re: World Building: The Wind Kingdom

Post by Thunder-Paws on Tue May 03, 2016 2:43 pm

Read it~ Here are my thoughts:

Overall I had something to say about the general culture and traits given to them. I find it interesting because it seems like the Wind Kingdom is... corrupted? In a way? In the laziness sense.

I say this because ordinarily, Air is one of the friendliest and sociable elements out there. Sanguine. Light. Clarity. Acuity.

HOWEVER. What you described falls under several negative traits of Wind. Unhealthy (often bored) wind leads to gossiping, lies, cunningness, back biting, and becoming prodigal. It behaves like a super popular high school girl that gossips negatively about everything.

That's just my thoughts.

Re: World Building: The Wind Kingdom

Post by Robin on Tue May 03, 2016 3:19 pm

That is very true. Perhaps I should go in MD highlight those? I meant the more "negative" traits to be seen as what the other nations perceive it as.

I believe wind wolves are... Coined "lazy" as they don't do Uh productive. They're intuitive, creative, and love to have fun. I can just imagine little wolf pups racing around on clouds xD

Yeah sorry I didnt mean to come off as not liking the idea xD

I think this looks amazing! Especially the land. Now that I think about it I can see why other nations would perceive them that way too.

Re: World Building: The Wind Kingdom

Post by Robin on Tue May 03, 2016 3:44 pm

I like the lands quite a bit. Translating was hard on y phone, but I thought it was worth it for the effect.

EDIT: I went through and basically copy-pasted what you said into the personality section of the wind element. Hopefully that will bring the more positive aspects of the Wind wolves to light.

EDITEDIT: Is there any possibility we could move the pictures from the posts after the initial to the pictures at the top and edit the top so it appears more... professional? I don't know how exactly we want everything to look, but it looks really cluttered as it is right now.

Although that might just be me.

Good job, bro ~ And with that the Wind Kingdom fulfills all essential building requirements. Others may continue to express their ideas if they choose to do so, but otherwise Wind is all set to go.
